Grade & Drainage Rebuild
Weeks
Structural Natural
This Clarington property had been fighting a losing battle with water for years. The backyard sloped toward the house, runoff pooled against the foundation during heavy rain, and previous attempts at quick fixes, French drains that clogged, surface grading that settled wrong, had only moved the problem around rather than solving it.
We approached it as an earthworks-first project because that's where the solution lived. A full regrade redirected surface flow away from the structure and toward planned discharge points. Engineered retaining walls converted unusable slope into two level terraced areas suitable for patio and lawn. Behind those walls: proper drainage stone, perforated pipe, and clean backfill so hydrostatic pressure never builds.
The upper terrace became a natural-stone patio on deep compacted base; the lower level was graded and prepped for future landscaping. Both drain correctly now, and the homeowners went from dreading heavy rain to barely noticing it.
Before/after: eroding slope vs stable terraced usable yard
